GAME REVIEW – Tales Of Monkey Island: Chapter 1 ‘Launch Of The Screaming Narwhal’

talesofmi_lechuck_conceptWhen Tales Of Monkey Island, and the forthcoming remake of The Secret Of Monkey Island, were announced at E3 this year, many adventure fans gasped in a mixture of shock and delight. Any adventure fan will surely tell you that adventure gaming, contrary to popular belief, never truly died. There have been some excellent adventures released in recent years, even if they have flown under the radar compared to the overwhelming explosion made by high-definition gaming and the PS3/XBOX360/Wii console dominance.

Yet the announcement that the adventure gaming series that every adventure gamer knows was being both remastered and expanded upon was a day many had thought would never come. The announcement that Telltale, consisting of many ex-Lucasarts employees who had already saved Sam and Max, would be helming the continuation of the story with downloadable episodes was also welcome news. The franchise was in safe, respectable hands. Even Lucasarts themselves were openly getting involved, whilst they also worked hard on their new Special Edition of The Secret Of Monkey Island (TM). FILM REVIEW – Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen

I am all for dumb, leave-your-brain-at the door cinema. No doubt about it, explosions and robots make me happy on some primal, base level. But this time, director Michael Bay has gone too far. Reverting back to what I can only imagine as a state of extreme teenage puberty, Bay has successfully managed here to create what ultimately amounts to two and a half hours of vigorously ejaculating male fantasy on screen, with total disregard for any of the usual, apparently needless stuff, that would stand in the way of his vision, like, oh I don’t know… a story perhaps? FILM REVIEW – Drag Me To Hell

Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell is a roller-coaster ride of a film that has completely surprised me and caught me off guard. I am openly not a particular fan of horror films. I have admittedly enjoyed some, such as the recent Stephen King adaptation The Mist, and older classics such as Don’t Look Now, but the majority of modern mainstream, lets-see-how-vulgar-and-disturbing-we-can-be torture porn-fests do little to entice me.

So it was with some trepidation that I went to see Drag Me To Hell. I was with a good friend and thought it might be fun to see a horror film for once, even though there were alternatives such as the usual safe-bet comedies and throw-away action flicks. It was actually a last minute decision in the queue as it was quite late and all the last showings had started.  Regardless, I am glad I made the decision to see this film.

FILM REVIEW – Terminator Salvation

After seeing Terminator Salvation last night, I was somewhat lost for words (unusual for me I can assure you.) The state I was in as I drove home was made up of both positives and negatives, all of which raced through my mind in some kind of self-loathing, fan-boyish frenzy.  As a long time fan of the Terminator franchise (not including the extremely disappointing T3), I had high hopes for the latest installment, against my better judgement.
