GAME REVIEW – Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge

By Marty Mulrooney

MI2SE

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, an adventure game that many gamers still consider to be one of the greatest of all time, has finally been re-released and given the same HD makeover treatment that The Secret Of Monkey Island received last year. However, by attempting to  remake a game that remains precious to adventure gamers worldwide even today, LucasArts has not only faced the tremendous challenge of updating a classic without diluting any of the ingredients that made it so special in the first place, but also the task of improving upon last year’s Secret Of Monkey Island: Special Edition, which split fans down the middle with its bold graphical updates and somewhat clunky controls.

Mini Interview – TOMI Season Finale: Rise Of The Pirate God (What Does Dominic Armato Think?)

By Marty Mulrooney

MonkeyIsland105 2009-12-11 17-14-35-82

I can’t believe that we are already here: Alternative Magazine Online’s final interview with Guybrush Threepwood voice actor Dominic Armato. A constant every month since the site was born, Dom has always provided me with fantastic answers and humbled me with his absolute cooperation. Reviewing the games and then picking his brain have really helped me grow as a writer and in turn raised the quality of the site. I am therefore proud (and somewhat quite sad) to present our final  interview, pertaining to the season finale of Tales Of Monkey Island, entitled Rise Of The Pirate God. Enjoy!

Hey everyone! If you are reading this, then congratulations. You are one of the increasingly large number of people who visits Alternative Magazine Online on a regular basis. You are the lifeblood of this whole experiment in offering something set slightly aside from the mainstream!

Today marks a very special day for the site, and for myself personally. That is because today, the site hits 6 months of age! I would have never thought all that time ago, not even graduated from university yet, that the site would grow so rapidly, or get such a wide variety of visitors and collaborators. So now, if you would please bear with me, I have several announcements to make!

GAME REVIEW – Tales Of Monkey Island: Chapter 2 ‘The Siege Of Spinner Cay’

By Marty Mulrooney

Spinner Cay Swordfight

After the euphoria that came along with the realisation that NEW Monkey Island games were being made started to wear off, I began to panic. Perhaps my review of Narwhal had been over generous? Perhaps the only way forward from there on was downwards. After all, there is a lot riding on this new series of games, not just for the future of the franchise, but perhaps for the future of the genre. Luckily, although there are some minor hick-ups in the second chapter of Tales Of Monkey Island, it largely builds on the strengths of the past episode. In fact, it served to remind me exactly why my review for Chapter 1 was justified in it’s praise: Monkey Island is back, and it is never less than a pleasure to watch Guybrush in his latest crazy adventure, doing what he does best… and some other stuff he sucks at! GAME REVIEW – Tales Of Monkey Island: Chapter 1 ‘Launch Of The Screaming Narwhal’

By Marty Mulrooney

tales_of_monkey_island_

talesofmi_lechuck_conceptWhen Tales Of Monkey Island, and the forthcoming remake of The Secret Of Monkey Island, were announced at E3 this year, many adventure fans gasped in a mixture of shock and delight. Any adventure fan will surely tell you that adventure gaming, contrary to popular belief, never truly died. There have been some excellent adventures released in recent years, even if they have flown under the radar compared to the overwhelming explosion made by high-definition gaming and the PS3/XBOX360/Wii console dominance.

Yet the announcement that the adventure gaming series that every adventure gamer knows was being both remastered and expanded upon was a day many had thought would never come. The announcement that Telltale, consisting of many ex-Lucasarts employees who had already saved Sam and Max, would be helming the continuation of the story with downloadable episodes was also welcome news. The franchise was in safe, respectable hands. Even Lucasarts themselves were openly getting involved, whilst they also worked hard on their new Special Edition of The Secret Of Monkey Island (TM). Expectations were running high. Continue reading
