GAME REVIEW – Tales Of Monkey Island: Chapter 5 ‘Rise Of The Pirate God’ (Season Finale)

By Marty Mulrooney

Chapter 4 of Tales Of Monkey Island was awarded Alternative Magazine Online’s first ever perfect 10 score last month, finishing on a cliff-hanger that blew many fans old and new completely away.

My main worry initially was that the season final would not be able to hold this momentum through to its conclusion, although I also noted in my review for Chapter 4 that I had the upmost faith that Telltale were up to the challenge. Thank god I was right. Rise Of The Pirate God dials that 10 up to 11 with admirable ease.

ALTERNATIVE MUSINGS – 2010: Nintendo’s Striking Year

By Stewie Sutherland

Frequent readers of Alternative Magazine Online know that we do our best to cover all mediums when it comes to games. Duncan has put some of the Xbox 360’s best games under the microscope, while Matt researches hot portable and PC titles, and our editor and site owner Marty has reviewed some of the Playstation 3’s must-have titles this year. This usually leaves yours truly covering the Nintendo side of things (though now that Marty has gotten himself a brand new Wii, I might just convert him yet!) and it’s a job I enjoy quite a bit!

That said, we’ve only got a few short weeks until Christmas ’09, so most people already have their shopping lists sorted. Yep, it’s that magical time of the year where toy ad’s run around the clock, people meet with their strange elderly relatives they see once every two years and in my house, the electric bill soars from putting up too many lights. Still though, if you’re a fan of Nintendo’s stronger names, then 2010 will be a big year. (And not just because we can stop saying that really long “two thousand and…” biz).

If you haven’t heard of Mike Stemmle, and still call yourself an adventure fan, then shame on you! As well as working at LucasArts during their glory years, Mr Stemmle is also a member of Telltale, and has recently been working on Tales Of Monkey Island  in the capacity of scriptwriter and designer.

Mini Interview – TOMI: The Trial And Execution Of Guybrush Threepwood (What Does Dominic Armato Think?)

By Marty Mulrooney

GuybrushSerious

After every new episode of Tales Of Monkey Island is released, Alternative Magazine Online of course posts a review. However, what we shall also be exclusively doing is asking Guybrush Threepwood voice actor Dominic Armato a few episode-specific questions every month, so that our readers can get some further insight to accompany the reviews. This month, it is of course all about the fourth chapter in Tales Of Monkey Island, entitled The Trial And Execution Of Guybrush Threepwood…

GAME REVIEW – Tales Of Monkey Island: Chapter 4 ‘The Trial And Execution Of Guybrush Threepwood’

By Marty Mulrooney

TOMI-Ep4Opening

At the end of my review for episode 3 of Tales Of Monkey Island last month, which I awarded a whopping 9.5 OUT OF 10, I noted that my only worry now was whether episode 4 would (could?) be even better, or would falter under the pressure being put upon it by fans old and new alike…

Loading up episode 4 this all played on my mind of course, but something else was eating at me from inside that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Something I couldn’t shake. It may have been the fact Winslow was tied up back on the Narwhal, not to be joining us on our latest adventure. It may have been the new night-time setting, making the once quite appealing, sunny shores of Flotsam almost remind me of the darkest moments of Monkey Island 2, with splendid lighting effects washing over our bound, silent hero. It may even have been Morgan herself, who we knew all along was an enemy, but didn’t want to quite believe would screw us over so nonchalantly. Continue reading

GAME REVIEW – Tales Of Monkey Island: Chapter 3 ‘Lair Of The Leviathan’

By Marty Mulrooney

TitleScreen

We are now at the halfway point in Telltale’s take on the Monkey Island Universe. Tales of Monkey Island has so far provided fans with two excellent games that we are still amazed have even seen the light of day in the first place… although I did note in my review for The Siege Of Spinner Cay that some technical shortcomings were ruining the proceedings somewhat… So now, it’s crunch time. We can no longer let nostalgia and love for this classic adventure franchise cloud our judgement. How does Chapter 3 measure up as an adventure game in its own right?

Well first of all, any technical shortcomings from the last two chapters have disappeared with this, the third chapter in a five-part adventure of piratey proportions. I am happy to say that Lair Of The Leviathan had addressed nearly every single niggle I had with the previous two episodes: it is tightly woven, consistently funny, and a joy in both the graphics and sound departments.
