GAME REVIEW – Tomb Raider (PlayStation 3)

Tomb Raider is an appropriately named reboot for one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. There’s no need for a suffix – after four previous Tomb Raider games developed by Crystal Dynamics, it seems that the time has come for a fresh start and a reconstructed origin story for the most well-loved and instantly recognisable female video game character in history. The year is 2013 and Lara Croft has finally become relevant again. Hot pants and dual pistols have been replaced by anguish, pain, a bow… and a pickaxe. From the wreckage of the ship Endurance, a survivor is born.

GAME REVIEW – The Cat Lady (PC)

The Cat Lady is the latest horror adventure game from Remigiusz Michalski, Harvester Games and Screen 7. Michalski, who created the little-known yet critically acclaimed point-and-click adventure game Downfall, returns here with an adult adventure game that deals with serial killers, depression and ultimately, hope. The player takes control of lonely 40-year old on the verge of suicide Susan Ashworth, aka The Cat Lady, as she battles her inner demons and a series of serial killers revealed to her by the mysterious Queen of Maggots….

Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller – Episode 2: The Wise Monkey (PC) is the second instalment in the Erica Reed series of episodic point-and-click adventure games created by Phoenix Online Studios. Following on directly from Episode 1 (which Alternative Magazine Online described as “a good old-fashioned adventure game like they used to make”), the game once again puts the player in control of Boston-based FBI agent Erica Reed. In Episode 2 she must face her most dangerous adversary yet – The Wise Monkey, a serial killer whose calling card involves removing the eyes, ears and tongues of her victims.

GAME REVIEW – The Journey Down: Chapter One (iPhone)

Alternative Magazine Online reviewed The Journey Down: Chapter One – HD (PC) in 2012, describing it as “one of the most essential adventure gaming experiences of the past few years.” Players take control of Bwana, a gas-station owner in a stylised world where everyone has a face like an African mask, as he tries to uncover a sinister plot involving the Armando Power Company and his long-missing father. A port of The Journey Down: Chapter One was recently released on the Apple App Store, offering players the chance to play this fantastic indie point-and-click adventure game on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
