GAME REVIEW – Braid

By Duncan Voice

Whenever I let The Missus test her wits on the Xbox, I must admit, I do get a bit frustrated. Watching over her shoulder, trying to resist the temptation to grab the controller back off her as she neglects to shoot the red barrel which five enemies have handily stood next to, or unloads a sniper clip into an enemy’s leg rather than take the head clean off at the neck.

There’s something that all gamers of relative experience tend to share, this knowledge of gaming conventions, our hidden weapon against even the hardest of modes. Yes, that Brute has twice the amount of health, and a questionably sized hammer, but I know exactly the right point at which I need to throw this plasma grenade to give him a new face-hole… Continue reading

Site Update – What Do YOU Think Of The Changes Being Made?

By Marty Mulrooney

Hey guys! Today, we hit a milestone with our 17,000th visitor! I am amazed how Alternative Magazine Online has grown, from what was basically a small blog, into a fully functioning site. We also recently took on another writer, bringing the count to four including myself. Welcome to the site Stewart Sutherland!

What does this mean for you, the reader? Well we have a wider range of topics we can write about. All the major games consoles are now covered, as shown recently by our Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 coverage, as well as our continuing PC coverage of course. It also means our other coverage (e.g film and book reviews) can come from more than a single voice, providing even more alternative views… which is what the site is all about!

Also, due to some bad times with my own computer dying recently, I have now upgraded to a brand new machine, and will be installing Windows 7 later this week. Again, this means the site can move with the times in many exciting new ways. Continue reading

GAME REVIEW – Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)

By Marty Mulrooney

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Before I review what is surely the biggest release of the month (if not the year), I must first set the scene. Although the PC is where I started as a gamer, it was the Playstation where I ultimately ended up, at least 90% of the time anyway. I have never strayed to other consoles (although I did dabble with the GameCube somewhat), and nowadays my Playstation 3 is a constant daily source of entertainment for me, echoing backwards through the gaming years of my PS2 and PS1 days.

Every single successful gaming console has risen or fallen based on not only the quality of the games on offer, but the level of brand recognition afforded by first party developers. Sega had Sonic, Nintendo had Mario, Microsoft had Master Chief. Playstation had several potential candidates, ranging from Crash Bandicoot to Solid Snake. Yet I would argue it was only with the PS3’s launch, and ‘the little game that could’ known as Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, that we finally got a mascot that screamed exclusivity, immense production values and genuine charm. Killzone 2: Alternative thoughts

By Marty Mulrooney

Killzone 2 for the Playstation 3 is graphically so far ahead of anything else that it is almost shocking. It has also been receiving rave reviews left, right and center. After completing the game twice, and having a good crack at the online multiplayer, I have decided to offer some thoughts on the game. I must start by saying I have enjoyed my time with it, and it was worth the money I paid. However, I feel it has been thoroughly over-praised.

My reasons for this are as follows:
