GAME PREVIEW – Worms Revolution (PC)

By Marty Mulrooney

Worms Revolution

Worms Revolution is the latest instalment in the hit video game series that began with the original Worms turn-based artillery game in 1995. Seventeen years later, in October 2012, Team17 plans to release Worms Revolution – which has been developed from the ground up and features a brand new game engine. After some dodgy 3D instalments – we’re looking at you Worms 3D – and several HD re-releases of the original Worms games, only one question remains. Can Worms Revolution revolutionise the series and return it to its roots?

ALTERNATIVE MUSINGS – Why Achievements Have Ruined Gaming

By Duncan Voice

xbox-360-avatar-caption-generatorI was having my monthly nostalgia moment in my local retro shop recently, gushing over the hundreds of Mega Drive, SNES and N64 carts they have there. No, this isn’t a stroll around Gloucester on a Wednesday evening, this is a night in the life of The Rookie, an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper.

This expansion-cum-full-game pits you as the aforementioned Rookie, as he tries to uncover the mystery behind the disappearance of his squad after they were knocked off course by the Prophet of Regrets ship, during a drop into New Mombasa. The game attempts to expand the  Halo storyline, and takes place during Halo 2 before The Covenant vitrify the city.

GAME REVIEW – Braid

By Duncan Voice

Whenever I let The Missus test her wits on the Xbox, I must admit, I do get a bit frustrated. Watching over her shoulder, trying to resist the temptation to grab the controller back off her as she neglects to shoot the red barrel which five enemies have handily stood next to, or unloads a sniper clip into an enemy’s leg rather than take the head clean off at the neck.

There’s something that all gamers of relative experience tend to share, this knowledge of gaming conventions, our hidden weapon against even the hardest of modes. Yes, that Brute has twice the amount of health, and a questionably sized hammer, but I know exactly the right point at which I need to throw this plasma grenade to give him a new face-hole… Continue reading
