FILM REVIEW – Evil Dead II

By Duncan Voice

evil-dead2-posterWe might not realise it, but we all owe Sam Raimi something. Be it for the superb Spiderman 1&2 (I’ve banished number 3 to the Room 101 of my mind), a newly developed phobia of buttons thanks to the fantastic Drag Me To Hell, or my favourite collection of horror films, The Evil Dead trilogy.

Most importantly, he thrust the man with the most animated chin in the world onto us (no, not Jimmy Hill), the brilliant Bruce Campbell.

For this short piece, I must warn, I’m pretty much going to gush about why Evil Dead II is my favourite horror film of all time. Continue reading

GAME REVIEW – Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption (PC)

By Stewie Sutherland

VampMasqFrontCoverAh, Halloween. Very rarely do I go into anything spooky or creepy, but if there’s one thing I can’t refuse it’s a good story. Something with likeable main characters, a flowing plot, a satisfying ending, and above all, length. Not often do you find something with all those things in it. Many of today’s games spend a lot of their disc size on high-end graphics and sacrifice length, or visa versa. (Final Fantasy XII is a good balance of both, amazing for a simple PS2-sized DVD!) But I can’t deny it: if you want length, visuals and balance, you have to go to the PC. Old now (coming out in 2000, and already having a second game based upon it), Activision’s Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption was a game that delivered just that. Continue reading

FILM REVIEW – Astro Boy

By Stewie Sutherland

astro-boy-2009

I had the unique opportunity to watch the new film Astro Boy recently,  purely as a member of the audience. For this statement to make sense, I have to stress that when it comes to franchises, I’m either a fan or I’m not. Growing up, Astro Boy was a show I vaguely remember as being on very early of a weekday, somewhere near the animated Abbot and Costello show.

I’m showing my age there, I’m sure (I’m 24) and I can only just remember it as something I’d run around the house singing along to when the credits came on. Being the closest thing to an Anime for the time of the late 80’s/early 90’s, Astro Boy was a classic tale of a robot boy who fought crime and evil and saved the world. I think. I can’t stress enough that I can only just remember these details. Long story short, I wasn’t that big of a fan, not when Inspector Gadget did the same job but with the legendary Don Adam’s at the helm. Continue reading

GAME REVIEW – Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo Wii)

By Stewie Sutherland

Wii_Fit_Plus titleWhile Sony and Microsoft are boasting the most powerful machines, the richest, state-of-the-art graphics and some of the world’s most innovative software titles to date, Nintendo have branched away from mainstream gaming and established themselves as a true Family console in the process.

This is nothing new of course: family has always been Nintendo’s watchword, a position they’ve been crystal clear on for many years now. Since the happy days of Mario’s platforming adventures, they’ve changed the way people view a “family system”, with motion controls and games that are not just games the latest weapons at their disposal.

And around Christmas of ’07, no product was in demand quite like their “exercise game”, Wii Fit. An outside-the-box idea that quickly grew until it became the third most sold game in history. Now that its sequel Wii Fit Plus (WFP) has become available, I went to pick up my own copy and find out if the latest healthly-lifestyle game could live up to its reputation. Continue reading
