ALTERNATIVE MUSINGS – Did GOG.com’s PR Stunt Succeed Or Go Too Far?

By Marty Mulrooney

GOG-tomb

One of AMO’s favourite digital download sites – GOG.com  – suddenly shut down last Sunday (19th September) without warning, leaving its community members feeling an immense sense of loss and confusion. Many customers were angry, whilst others claimed this news was merely a cleverly worded way of moving out of the site’s beta stage and celebrating GOG.com’s upcoming two year birthday. Thankfully, with new information made available to us via a recent live online press conference (which took place earlier this afternoon), AMO can now reveal that the latter is true and GOG.com’s death was indeed a hoax. But was this a genuinely clever PR stunt or one that went too far?

GAME REVIEW – Machinarium: Collector’s Edition

By Marty Mulrooney

machinariumcollectorsedition

If you still haven’t played last year’s surprise indie point ‘n’ click success Machinarium, shame on you! As detailed in my review, it is a wonderful little game that deserves to reach as wide an audience as possible. Furthermore, there is now absolutely no excuse for not adding this adventure to your collection: for those of you still adverse to digital downloads, Amanita Design have teamed up with Mamba Lace Global to offer a retail version of the game. Not only that, but it comes bundled with an impressive collection of additional goodies making it seriously good value for money!

Published in 2008, The Art Of The Video Game by Josh Jenisch not only disagrees with this claim, but disproves it by offering examples from a wide range of modern day video games.

GAME REVIEW – Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse, Episode 5 – The City That Dares Not Sleep

By Marty Mulrooney

The final episode of Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse is finally upon us. A somewhat mixed season so far – in this reviewer’s eyes at least –  the City That Dares Not Sleep wastes no time making amends. It is an epic finale in every sense of the word. What’s more, the game has changed. We no longer get to play with the ‘Toys Of Power’ (nearly all of them were destroyed at the end of last episode remember) and Max is a now a lumbering giant, a monster destroying the city. This leaves Sam going solo in the more traditional Telltale mould, desperate to save his little buddy. What ensues had me grinning from ear to ear…
