FEATURE ARTICLE – Silent Hill 2 Remake: In My Restless Dreams, I See That Video Game

Silent Hill 2 (2024) is a ground-up remake of the seminal survival horror game of the same name (2001). When it was first announced in October 2022, I remember being completely blown away by the graphical fidelity, art direction and soundscape of the teaser trailer. I also remember thinking: ‘It’s such a shame I won’t be able to play it.’ The prospect filled me with dread. Yet, when it was finally released two years later, much to my own surprise, I bought it, played it and completed it. And I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

Slender Threads is a point-and-click thriller adventure developed and published by Blyts, the team behind the ‘genuinely funny, often hilarious’ 2016 comedy adventure Kelvin and the Infamous Machine. In Slender Threads, players must take control of travelling book salesman Harvey Green – himself an aspiring author with writer’s block – as he explores the sleepy seaside town of Villa Ventana. But with death dogging him at every turn, how many people will die before sunrise?

The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow is a folk horror point-and-click adventure game from developer Cloak & Dagger Games, published by Wadjet Eye Games. Set in the sleepy British village of Bewlay, players take control of spirited author and antiquarian Thomasina Bateman, who plans to excavate Hob’s Barrow – an ancient burial mound – despite a lack of co-operation from the locals. But was the barrow sealed to stop people like her getting in… or to stop something getting out?
