FILM REVIEW – The Blind Side

Improbability and racial guilt are two very powerful elements and both of them are ladled into the mix heavily in this surprising addition to the pantheon of recent Oscar winning films.

The Blind Side is based on a true story but there is such a suspension of disbelief in some scenes you have to wonder whether Hollywood has weaved its perverse brand of revisionism into the film’s fabric, or if the producers were duped by those upon whom the story is based.

FILM REVIEW – Kick-Ass

Kick-Ass is the latest in a long line of superhero flicks to hit the big screen. Based on the recent comic book series by Marvel (the film rights were actually sold before the comic went to print), I knew from the trailers it was going to be pretty insane. So I eagerly took my seat in anticipation of what would hopefully be a fresh spin on this often sadly formulaic genre.

FILM REVIEW – Shutter Island

Director Martin Scorsese’s latest film sees him team up once more with actor Leonardo DiCaprio, this time in a psychological thriller more akin to Cape Fear than Goodfellas. I must admit, I was pretty worried that Shutter Island would ultimately present us with bog standard horror fare, but boy was I wrong. This is one hell of a film: it claws its way into your head and continues to nibble at the edges constantly throughout.

FILM REVIEW – Alice In Wonderland (2D Version)

Alongside Labyrinth and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Disney’s 1951 animated classic Alice in Wonderland remains one of the most terrifying films of my childhood. It was the peculiar worlds that the characters found themselves in without any way out terrified the 8 year old Duncs. I’d frequently raid my big brother’s VHS collection for the Predator’s and Hellraiser’s of which did nothing for me, but when Alice went down that rabbit hole, man was I in for some bother.
