Arrietty is a Japanese animated film created by Studio Ghibli, based upon the 1952 novel The Borrowers by English author Mary Norton. It tells the story of Arrietty, a tiny little girl who lives with her mother and father beneath the floorboards of a house in western Tokyo. By Marty Mulrooney

cover_ponyo_se_uk

Optimum Home Entertainment have just released a special Limited Deluxe Edition (+ DVD copy) of Studio Ghibli’s most recent masterpiece, Ponyo, on Blu-ray. I reviewed the film for AMO when it was originally in the cinema, so I wasn’t planning to review the home release when it arrived. However, once I got my hands on this Limited Deluxe Edition I knew I would have to share my thoughts on this delightful set with as many people as I possibly could!

FILM REVIEW – Ponyo (Studio Ghibli)

By Marty Mulrooney

As a huge Studio Ghibli fan, it has been driving me somewhat mad knowing that Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated feature film originally came out in July 2008 in Japan and was then released with an English dub in August 2009, but only in the US. It has only just arrived in the UK in February 2010! Frustrating to say the least. So was it worth the wait?

INTERVIEW – In Conversation With Colin Odell and Michelle Le Blanc (Authors of Studio Ghibli: The Films of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata)

By Marty Mulrooney

C&M

I recently reviewed the wonderfully comprehensive Studio Ghilbi: The Films Of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata (Kamera Books) by Colin Odell & Michelle Le Blanc, awarding it 9 OUT OF 10 and declaring it to be ‘the authoritative English language text on Studio Ghibli.’ It was therefore a great pleasure to be able to catch up with the authors and discuss this seminal work for a special interview exclusive to Alternative Magazine Online.

BOOK REVIEW – Studio Ghibli (Kamera Books) by Colin Odell & Michelle Le Blanc

By Marty Mulrooney

StudioGhibliKamerabooks

Western fans of the animation masters at Studio Ghibli will no doubt agree that, somewhat disappointingly, information about the studio is often severely lacking beyond the special features available to us on DVD. I was therefore highly intrigued when I noticed that Kamera Books were about to release Studio Ghbili: The Films of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. But would this finally be the book to accurately detail Ghibli’s history down on paper for English-speaking fans, or merely become a rehash of what we already know?

INTERVIEW – In Conversation With Merlin Crossingham, Lead Animator At Aardman Animation

By Marty Mulrooney

Aardman_Logo_pvThis interview was originally published within the print version of Alternative Magazine Online, going towards my media degree (on my 21st Birthday actually, January 09). Since then, Aardman (who recently celebrated their 20th anniversary!) have kindly given me permission to reproduce the interview in full on Alternative Magazine Online’s  rapidly growing site. I hope you enjoy it!

One thing that Alternative learnt during it’s pursuit of an interview with an Aardman employee, was this: they are always busy. But we persevered, and that is how this interview came to fruition. The fact it is conducted via mobile phone whilst the interviewee is on a train only further drives home our point, but we think the results were worthwhile.
