GAME REVIEW – Tales Of Monkey Island (PC, Wii, PlayStation 3)

By Marty Mulrooney

TOMICover

Tales Of Monkey Island was released to critical acclaim last year on PC, followed by ports on both Wii and PS3. I immediately noticed that there was a surprising lack of concrete detail about the quality of the console ports available online. Therefore, when I finally finished the game recently on all three platforms, I decided to share my thoughts with AMO’s readers. This review will be less a review of the game itself (which comprises five chapters, each of which is fantastic) and instead offer a write-up on the different versions available and their various strengths/weaknesses.

GAME REVIEW – Worms 2: Armageddon (PSN/PlayStation 3)

By Marty Mulrooney

Worms2ArmageddonLogo copy

Worms 2: Armageddon is the latest instalment in the popular Worms franchise from Team 17, released on XBLA in 2009 and finally hitting PSN in 2010. Not to be confused with Worms 2 (1998) or Worms Armageddon (1999), Worms 2: Armageddon is a direct sequel to the XBLA (2007) / PSN (2009) reboot Worms, featuring many of the franchise’s best qualities, as well as showcasing a few improvements of its own.

GAME REVIEW – Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game (PSN/XBLA)

By Marty Mulrooney

ScottPilgrim_keyart_final_UK

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game is an old school side-scrolling beat ‘em up based within the Scott Pilgrim universe. For those unfamiliar with Scott Pilgrim, he is the titular hero of his own series of graphic novels created by Bryan Lee O’Malley, which were recently adapted for the big screen by director Edgar Wright in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (reviewed here). This downloadable PSN/XBLA game is a tie-in of sorts, taking its art direction directly from the source material, with input from both O’Malley and Wright. The end result is a delightful blend of faux-retro excellence that is both addictively compulsive and a stark reminder of gaming years gone by.

GAME REVIEW – Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse, Episode 5 – The City That Dares Not Sleep

By Marty Mulrooney

SamMax305 2010-08-30 11-57-29-90

The final episode of Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse is finally upon us. A somewhat mixed season so far – in this reviewer’s eyes at least –  the City That Dares Not Sleep wastes no time making amends. It is an epic finale in every sense of the word. What’s more, the game has changed. We no longer get to play with the ‘Toys Of Power’ (nearly all of them were destroyed at the end of last episode remember) and Max is a now a lumbering giant, a monster destroying the city. This leaves Sam going solo in the more traditional Telltale mould, desperate to save his little buddy. What ensues had me grinning from ear to ear…

GAME REVIEW – DeathSpank (Xbox Live Arcade & PlayStation Network)

By Duncan Voice

DeathSpankBoxArt

DeathSpank is the creation of Ron Gilbert, one of the brilliant minds responsible for the perennial AMO favourite Monkey Island series. His development team Hothead Games released the well received Penny Arcade Adventures: On The Rain-Slick Precipice Of Darkness – Episode One back in 2008. Their latest title is DeathSpank, a downloadable only hack and slash adventure… and it’s bloody funny!

GAME REVIEW – Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse, Episode 3 – They Stole Max’s Brain!

By Marty Mulrooney

SamMax303 2010-06-22 18-59-37-65

They Stole Max’s Brain! is undoubtedly the most difficult Telltale episode I have had to review for some time. It successfully showcases what the company has quite rightly became synonymous with over the past few years (amazing storylines and characters) along with some of their earlier missteps showing up too (puzzles that are too easy, the occasional glitch). The end result is an episode that still shines, just not as brightly as last month’s phenomenal effort.
