By Marty Mulrooney

Alternative Magazine Online turned 1 year old today! It has been a fantastic year for the site and I never expected it to reach the stage that it has done in such a short space of time, so I thought I would take a moment to say a few words…

ALTERNATIVE MUSINGS – Where It All Began: Alternative Magazine, 2009

By Marty Mulrooney

Alternative Magazine Cover

A little bit of trivia for AMO’s readers: it all began as a project for my BA Degree in Media and Film, specialising in Print Journalism and Advanced Screenwriting. That’s right, Alternative Magazine began as an actual physical, printed magazine. Previously only seen by friends and family (and the moderators, who gave it a splendid mark I might add!), you too can now finally see how it all started…

ALTERNATIVE MUSINGS – Alternative Magazine Online: 2009 Roundup/Awards

By Marty Mulrooney

With 2010 now upon us whether we like it or not, I realised that it would probably be a good idea to look back at what made 2009 such a special year. Sure, it saw the birth of AMO, but where would we have been in the first place without so many great games, books and films to review? I can’t claim to have seen everything out there worth seeing last year, but I tried my best during the course of running this site to pour over as much cool stuff as possible. I would therefore be delighted to share the cream of the crop with you based on my foray into the world of online journalism during 2009. Read on!

ALTERNATIVE MUSINGS – 2010: Nintendo’s Striking Year

By Stewie Sutherland

Frequent readers of Alternative Magazine Online know that we do our best to cover all mediums when it comes to games. Duncan has put some of the Xbox 360’s best games under the microscope, while Matt researches hot portable and PC titles, and our editor and site owner Marty has reviewed some of the Playstation 3’s must-have titles this year. This usually leaves yours truly covering the Nintendo side of things (though now that Marty has gotten himself a brand new Wii, I might just convert him yet!) and it’s a job I enjoy quite a bit!

That said, we’ve only got a few short weeks until Christmas ’09, so most people already have their shopping lists sorted. Yep, it’s that magical time of the year where toy ad’s run around the clock, people meet with their strange elderly relatives they see once every two years and in my house, the electric bill soars from putting up too many lights. Still though, if you’re a fan of Nintendo’s stronger names, then 2010 will be a big year. (And not just because we can stop saying that really long “two thousand and…” biz).

Site Update – What Do YOU Think Of The Changes Being Made?

By Marty Mulrooney

Hey guys! Today, we hit a milestone with our 17,000th visitor! I am amazed how Alternative Magazine Online has grown, from what was basically a small blog, into a fully functioning site. We also recently took on another writer, bringing the count to four including myself. Welcome to the site Stewart Sutherland!

What does this mean for you, the reader? Well we have a wider range of topics we can write about. All the major games consoles are now covered, as shown recently by our Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 coverage, as well as our continuing PC coverage of course. It also means our other coverage (e.g film and book reviews) can come from more than a single voice, providing even more alternative views… which is what the site is all about!

Also, due to some bad times with my own computer dying recently, I have now upgraded to a brand new machine, and will be installing Windows 7 later this week. Again, this means the site can move with the times in many exciting new ways. Continue reading

Today marks a very special day for the site, and for myself personally. That is because today, the site hits 6 months of age! I would have never thought all that time ago, not even graduated from university yet, that the site would grow so rapidly, or get such a wide variety of visitors and collaborators. So now, if you would please bear with me, I have several announcements to make!

On the 20th August 2009, Alternative Magazine Online owner Martin Mulrooney had the great pleasure of chatting to DJ Pete Price on local radio show City Talk (105.9FM.) His show that evening was all about discussing films past and present, providing a great chance for the website to not only get some free publicity, but for Marty to talk about some of his own cinematic favourites!
