FILM REVIEW – The Mist (Blu-Ray)

By Marty Mulrooney

TheMistBluRayCoverWith Halloween just around the corner, I thought it would be fun to review a great little horror film called The Mist, which was released in 2007. Based on a Stephen King  novella, and directed by long-time King collaborater Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile), The Mist tells the somewhat deceptively simple tale of a father and his son, stuck in a supermarket with a bunch of strangers, in an even stranger mist. FILM REVIEW – Astro Boy

By Stewie Sutherland

astro-boy-2009

I had the unique opportunity to watch the new film Astro Boy recently,  purely as a member of the audience. For this statement to make sense, I have to stress that when it comes to franchises, I’m either a fan or I’m not. Growing up, Astro Boy was a show I vaguely remember as being on very early of a weekday, somewhere near the animated Abbot and Costello show.

I’m showing my age there, I’m sure (I’m 24) and I can only just remember it as something I’d run around the house singing along to when the credits came on. Being the closest thing to an Anime for the time of the late 80’s/early 90’s, Astro Boy was a classic tale of a robot boy who fought crime and evil and saved the world. I think. I can’t stress enough that I can only just remember these details. Long story short, I wasn’t that big of a fan, not when Inspector Gadget did the same job but with the legendary Don Adam’s at the helm. Continue reading

Site Update – What Do YOU Think Of The Changes Being Made?

By Marty Mulrooney

bio pic 2

Hey guys! Today, we hit a milestone with our 17,000th visitor! I am amazed how Alternative Magazine Online has grown, from what was basically a small blog, into a fully functioning site. We also recently took on another writer, bringing the count to four including myself. Welcome to the site Stewart Sutherland!

What does this mean for you, the reader? Well we have a wider range of topics we can write about. All the major games consoles are now covered, as shown recently by our Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 coverage, as well as our continuing PC coverage of course. It also means our other coverage (e.g film and book reviews) can come from more than a single voice, providing even more alternative views… which is what the site is all about!

Also, due to some bad times with my own computer dying recently, I have now upgraded to a brand new machine, and will be installing Windows 7 later this week. Again, this means the site can move with the times in many exciting new ways. Continue reading

TV REVIEW – Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 7 Episode 2

By Marty Mulrooney

Larry&Leon

*Warning! Due to the nature of the show, this review may contain mild spoilers.*

Episode 2: Vehicular Fellatio

Aired last night in the UK, episode 2 of Curb Your Enthusiasm season 7 has proven that episode 1 was no fluke… the funniest show on television is back! Sure, I may be as juvenile as Larry David (I giggle just saying the episode title of this one!) but the comedy of the show is anything but.

As always, the show has taken basic things that people may have experienced in their daily life, such as vacuum packaged gifts that you cannot get open (entombed in plastic!),and turned them into their worst case scenarios with reckless abandon. (If you have experienced the episode title, then you may not be so proud after this episode let me tell you! Kills more people than cell phones! Oh and by the way you are one lucky sonofa… ahem… anyway!) Continue reading
