INTERVIEW – In Conversation With Josh Hewitt and Jysi Hewitt (Musicians, Amarante)

By Marty Mulrooney

Josh & Jysi Hewitt are a married musical duo who continue to overcome hardship (largely caused by the recession of 2008) through their music. Recording in a crowded room (they have three children) with one mic, they have over 15,000 followers on Soundcloud and over 10,000 Twitter followers, along with the support of many bloggers and radio DJs. Download numbers of their tracks break the thousands. AMO is therefore proud to present an exclusive online interview with Josh & Jysi Hewitt, aka Amarante!

Hello Josh & Jysi, thank you for your time and welcome to AMO! Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourselves please?

We are a married couple from Fresno, CA.  We have three children and love the art of music!

How did you both meet?

We met on a webcam chat site called Stickam, we both shared a similar interest in music and that sparked our curiosity in each other.

When did you first start making music together?

We met with the knowledge we both loved music, so it didn’t take long for me (Josh) to pick up an acoustic guitar and Jysi sang along and we knew there was something special going on.

How and when was ‘Amarante’ born?

Amarante was born in 2007 when we threw a couple of songs together and people started to become interested. We decided to continue doing what we loved which was to make music.

How hard were you hit by the recession of 2008?

Mostly with the trouble of finding stable employment which pushed us even more to create music about our love and lives.

I love the name ‘Amarante’ – is there any particular meaning behind it?

We found the name on a baby name website. It had an elegant sound to it and we instantly fell in love with it. The definition in the book said it meant ‘the flower that never fades’.

How would you describe your music?

An eclectic indie/folk blend of electronic and organic sounds.

How do you record your songs?

We use a single mic to individually record all the natural sounds such as acoustic/vocals/percussion and it all happens in our bedroom with potential noise interference from our three children.

What do your children think of their parents making music? 🙂

Our oldest loves to join in and has even had guest vocals on a few of our songs.

How have you found the response to your music so far?

We have had an overwhelmingly huge response of mostly positive listeners.

Who writes the songs?

The song writing process is usually a combined effort of opinion. Josh making the acoustic guitar parts and us both creating structure and melody.

What is your favourite song that you’ve recorded so far?

Josh: My favourite would have to be Control and The Travelers.

Jysi: My favourites are Buried Beneath and The Despondent One.

What does this music mean to you?

It is our heart and soul poured into melody. It is our expression.

Have you ever performed in front of a live audience? Would you like to?

We have had a few live performances and hope to expand that immensely.

What’s next for Amarante?

Live shows… more music… and hopefully for the world to hear our love for it.

Thank you for your time, and good luck!
