FILM REVIEW – Sherlock Holmes

By Marty Mulrooney

I haven’t read any of the original book in years (or the countless short stories), but I always remember thinking that Sherlock Holmes had never really been done justice when being translated to film. Instead, to many he had become little more than a pipe-smoking, cloak and deerstalker cap wearing detective.

So when I heard that British director Guy Ritchie was going to put his own unique spin on things, I was intrigued. Would this simply be ‘Lock, Stock’ set in the late 1800’s? Or would the iconic detective finally get the visual treatment he deserved? The answer seems to lie somewhere in-between the two…

BOOK REVIEW – Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton

By Stewie Sutherland

Over the winter holidays, I sat down with a few days off to read the latest book from HarperCollins Publishers, Pirate Latitudes by the late (and truly great) Michael Crichton. GAME REVIEW – Commandos: Ammo Pack (1998/1999)

By Stewie Sutherland

commandoscover

One of the few games my PC could run back in school, Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines and its update, Beyond The Call Of Duty (combined, they make the Commandos: Ammo Pack) were the thinking man’s distraction. A top-down view of a scene set in WWII, players had to plan a sharp, precise strategy to complete the objective of a team of Commandos. Easier said than done, when the scenes were crawling with enemy soldiers who were watching and listening for the slightest signs of trouble. Rushing in head first with guns blazing was a sure way to get killed, too.
