When Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse was announced as a Kickstarter campaign last month (23rd August 2012), a funding target of $400,000 was set and fans around the world rejoiced. After only two short weeks (on 6th September 2012) $400,000 was achieved… and then surpassed. Stretch goals were announced and only one question remained – what would the final amount raised be? Today, on Saturday 22nd September 2012, the Broken Sword 5 Kickstarter campaign closed its doors with $771,561 pledged, 14,032 backers and over 30,000 comments! And that’s not including PayPal…
Sir Charles Cecil thanked fans this morning by saying:
“It has been the most amazing adventure for which we offer you huge thanks. Your generosity will profoundly affect how we are now able to create new games.”
A major factor of the success of this campaign has undoubtedly been the warmth and generosity of the adventure gaming community. For a number of years, many gamers and gaming journalists said that adventure games were dead – they couldn’t have been more wrong. The Order of the Goat is one such example of the strength of the adventure gaming community – please come join us (if you haven’t already done so) in the run-up to Broken Sword 5’s release.

It has been incredible to see pledgers helping those with less funds, ‘topping up’ other pledgers so that they too could achieve their goals. Furthermore, gaining membership to the Order of the Goat involved raising pledges by $7.77, an amount that went straight towards the game itself with no reward received in return apart from a warm sense of satisfaction and belonging. I myself witnessed such kindness first-hand when several of my fellow goats/pledgers got together to raise some money so that I could have an Order of the Goat t-shirt – which I couldn’t afford – and a bottle opener too! I was truly overwhelmed and humbled by people’s generosity and kindness, especially after going though a difficult few months.
I would like to personally thank everyone that I have had the pleasure of chatting with via the Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse Kickstarter campaign over the past four weeks, whether you are a member of the Revolution Software team, a voice actor (hello Rolf and Hazel!) or a fellow pledging fan/goat like myself. You are an incredible group of people and it has been a joy to spend far more time at the computer than is healthy, chatting with you all from first thing in the morning until last thing at night. I’ve had a great time, made some great friends and I hope we all stay in touch right up until Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse releases next year – and far beyond!
Congratulations Revolution Software! Paris in the spring…
