Alan Wake, Remedy Entertainment’s first venture since Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne, wasn’t exactly the gaming world’s best kept secret upon its release earlier this year. The hype machine surrounding the title, plus an ambitious viral marketing campaign, created sky-high expectations that would be difficult to fulfil. Thankfully, Finland’s finest have succeeded, by creating one of the most cinematic and eerie gaming experiences to date.

FILM REVIEW – Predators

Despite “Goooo! Get to da choppah!” becoming a part of the common nerd lexicon, the Predator franchise has always lagged behind its competitors. Series like Star Trek and Star Wars are (excuse the pun) in a completely different universe and so the main rival to the Predator series has been the Alien franchise. Unfortunately for the majority of us the battle between the two rivals was recently explored in the Alien vs. Predator movies, both of which can be fairly described as awful. And now in 2010 we have Predators.

BOOK REVIEW – White Crow by Marcus Sedgwick

White Crow is the latest novel from award-winning children’s author Marcus Sedgwick, published this month by Orion. I have been finding more and more recently that supposed ‘young adult’ category books are often beating adult novels hands down. I am happy to say that White Crow is no exception. Following the rapidly entwining lives of two young girls in the sleepy English seaside village of Winterfold, it is a story both chilling and beautiful in equal measures.

GAME REVIEW – Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii)

Those who know me well will attest to the following: I am a big wuss when it comes to scary films and video games. Which is actually quite odd, as I was reading Stephen King’s The Shining at age 10 without even thinking twice. I love horror novels, but scary games are often played for a while and then left on a shelf gathering dust where they can’t hurt me. Yet having recently bitten the horror gaming bullet by playing both Dead Space and Resident Evil 5 on PS3 despite my low scare threshold, I decided Silent Hill: Shattered Memories would be my next tentative step into the world of interactive horror…
