INTERVIEW – In Conversation With Steve Ince, Video Game Writer & Designer

By Marty Mulrooney

Steve Ince is that rare breed of game designer that embraces the gaming community wholeheartedly. He has been involved in the creation of some of the biggest adventure games of all time, including Beneath A Steel Sky and the Broken Sword series. Over the years, I have seen him chatting with gamers in various forums, discussing not only his own work but other games within the adventure genre as well. He is as much a fan as a creator and this enthusiasm always shines through.

Nothing has ever been quite as surreal as popping Broken Sword: The Director’s Cut into my Wii a few months ago whilst twittering with Steve about the series: like many of the old Revolution Software crowd, Mr Ince is always a pleasure to talk to. Hopefully, I can now pass this pleasure onto Alternative Magazine Online’s readers as well. Without further ado, I am delighted to present a recent conversation between myself and Mr Steve Ince…

GAME REVIEW – Mr Smoozles Goes Nutso (Juniper Games, 2006)

By Marty Mulrooney

MrSmoozlesGoesNutso

Mr Smoozles Goes Nutso is the brainchild of Steve Ince, an award-winning writer and designer with over 17 years experience in the gaming industry, including helping to write and design the much loved Broken Sword series of adventure games during his time at Revolution Software.

Based on his own online comic strip (Mr Smoozles), the game has a charm and identity that feels delightfully retro. It will also feel very familiar to fans of his design work and the previous games he has worked on. I was certainly very interested to see what this world-class designer would be offering players with his indie gaming debut.

Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon Review (ACG)

By Marty Mulrooneybroken-sword-3blog

My second review for adventureclassicgaming.com is up!

This was actually the first article I did as a reviewer for the site, although as it is an older game (considered retro already perhaps?) it is the second to be posted. Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon is the third game in the highly successful Broken Sword franchise from Revolution Software (based in the UK). Yet again, George Stobbart and Nico Collard become embroiled in a plot that will take them all over the world. Although I felt it suffered somewhat in its transition from the 2D of the original games to the 3d engine presented here, I still felt that the story was excellent as usual, especially as it revisited some of the templar themes from Broken Sword 1 (arguably still the best in the series, even after all these years.)
