MUSIC REVIEW – Recovery by Eminem

By Joseph Viney

Eminem

We all know the routine by now: “Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?”, “Hi, my name is…”. The man who’s first two major-label albums were eponymous has always been keen to introduce and re-introduce himself to his audience. After the first two albums, both of which were savage, rhythmic and dazzlingly coherent, Eminem descended into something of a rough patch.

He aimed his ire at George Bush and the War On Terror (Mosh), conflicts between fellow rappers (Like Toy Soldiers) and finally lapsed into some truly dreadful self-referential work that bordered on parody (Just Lose It, Without Me). After the tired efforts of the previous two LPs Encore and Relapse, surely the time is right for the comeback of the man who caused such a storm of controversy when he was turned loose on the mainstream consciousness?

MUSIC REVIEW – Follow Your First Mind by Wilson T. King

By Marty Mulrooney

wilson-t-king-follow-your-first-mind

WIlson T. King may not be an artist that large amounts of music followers, specifically guitar fans, have heard of quite yet. At least, not loudly enough for my liking. But he’s getting there and I think that is all set to change. Coming from a background of being the chief writer and producer in numerous English indie bands, King has played the Blues for most of his life. His mission to share this often neglected genre with us in his debut album is a noble one. Luckily, he also has the guitar skills to see this vision through. Whether you are a fan of Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck or Joe Bonamassa, you won’t want to miss Follow Your First Mind.

INTERVIEW – In Conversation With Dave Lord (Lead Singer, Ambershift)

By Joseph Viney

Left to right: Ben Clement - Guitar, Phil Hodgson - Drums, Dave Lord - Vocals/Bass, Andy Green - Keys

Emerging from the North East of England, Ambershift are keen to blaze a trail across the country. Taking their inspiration from acts such as The Police, The Smiths and New Order, Ambershift want to be the group that defines the soundtrack to your life. Soldiering on without any of the privileges enjoyed by other bands such as expensive PR and a fear-inducing management team, Ambershift are doing things the old-fashioned way; travelling in packed vans, lugging their own gear and building up a fan base one gig at a time.

Lead singer and bass-player Dave Lord has kindly taken some time out of his busy schedule to tell AMO more about the band.

MUSIC REVIEW – Brothers by The Black Keys

By Joseph Viney

Brothers The Black Keys

The Black Keys took their name from a turn of phrase uttered by a friend of the band. Dan Auerbach (vocals/guitar) and Patrick Carney (drums/production) would often hear their mutual acquaintance, a diagnosed schizophrenic, deem people he did not like as “…black keys”. For a long while now it has been fair to say that those who didn’t enjoy their blend of old school blues, heavy rock and lo-fi sensibilities also suffered from a debilitating mental illness. Taking their lead from such acts as The Sonics, Captain Beefheart and the White Stripes, Black Keys have effectively carved out their own niche and built up a dedicated fan base. As well as this they have been given free reign to conduct themselves as they see fit.
