BOOK REVIEW – Dracula: The Un-Dead

By Marty Mulrooney

DraculaTheUn-Dead

The official sequel to Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel Dracula, co-written by a direct descendant of Stoker himself (whom we interviewed in 2009 here), Dracula: The Un-Dead is wonderfully executed.  It is a book that takes any whispered accusations  of being a mere cash-in, throws them aside,  and in the process provides a story that is not only worthy of being called an official successor to the classic novel, but is actually a brilliant tale in its own right.

BOOK REVIEW – Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton

By Stewie Sutherland

piratelatitudescover

Over the winter holidays, I sat down with a few days off to read the latest book from HarperCollins Publishers, Pirate Latitudes by the late (and truly great) Michael Crichton. The tale revolves around a crew of privateers stealing a sizable treasure from under the noses of the Spanish guarding it. Do not, whatever you do, expect a story of banter and booze, parrying swords or armies of floating corsairs. Pirate Latitudes, written by Crichton before his death in 2008, is a story of blood, mud and sacrifice, and relentless storms waiting to crush those who sail the ocean unprepared.

Book Review – Druids 1: The Ogham Sacrifice (Graphic Novel)

By Marty Mulrooney

Druids The Ogham Sacrifice

Druids 1: The Oghmam Sacrifice is a graphic novel that has just been released by Dalen Books (publishers of Celtic graphic novels in English and Welsh). They describe it as:

The first volume of a gothic thriller set in the Age of the Saints. There is turmoil in the 5th century Celtic periphery of Europe – an age of change at the end of the Roman Empire and an age of conflict between peoples and religions. Oppressed by Saxons to the east, many of the Celts of Britain have colonised Armorica in Gaul. Gwynlan, the last of the Druids, is caught in a mysterious battle for survival against the monks of the church. Accusations of depravity, murder, sacrifice and sorcery are rife, but the old gods are at hand to assist the righteous.

I would describe Druids as a graphic novel that I started to read with some interest, before being totally sucked in and enthralled. This really is a little gem!

BOOK REVIEW – America (The Book): A Citizen’s Guide to Democracy Inaction By Jon Stewart

By Stewie Sutherland

America The Book Cover

It’s really no secret that I’m a big fan of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, which is beamed to many countries’ basic cable providers. For this reason it might be overlooked. The show, hosted by Comedy Central in America, is also only available via cable there, and isn’t the most well-known program. If you look for it though, you can find it: the show has gained such popularity that it now includes a Global Edition (The Daily Show airs Monday-Thursday – due to the lag in transmission, it is played in other countries Tuesday to Friday, with a recap of the previous week’s best moments in a special format for Monday).

They’re very busy people, yet somehow they managed to get enough time to write this incredible book of historical inaccuracy, political scandals and “what not to do if you’re trying to become a democracy”. In case all of this is Greek to you, I’m happy to explain it! Continue reading
