FILM REVIEW – Black Swan

In the months leading up to its release, the cinema world has been abuzz about Darren Aronofsky’s latest feature Black Swan. Set within the competitive world of a prestigious New York ballet company, this dark psychological thriller examines themes of mental illness, jealousy and duality. With 2008’s critically acclaimed The Wrestler under his belt, Aronofsky has yet again turned to a tale of physical dedication… but, does this film starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis live up to all the hype or is it just another standard psychological horror flick?

BOOK REVIEW – Lost At Sea by Bryan Lee O’Malley (Graphic Novel)

Canadian writer and cartoonist Bryan Lee O’Malley stated in his third ever graphic novel that ‘his only goal in life was to become rich.’ The book in question was the second instalment of the smash-hit series of Scott Pilgrim graphic novels. Joking or not, the Pilgrim series and the Edgar Wright adapted film have surely and undoubtedly made O’Malley a very rich man indeed. However in 2003, a year before the glitz and glamour of Scott Pilgrim, O’Malley introduced us to another character, in his debut book Lost At Sea.

DVD REVIEW – The Ricky Gervais Show (HBO, Channel 4)

What do you get when you take a comedian, an BAFTA Award-winning writer and an uneducated radio producer and put them in a small room with a set of microphones? The answer is the most downloaded podcast ever recorded. Over two hundred thousand people have tuned in to hear Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington gather for “pointless conversations” about everything from religion, travel, reproduction, charity and monkeys. After debuting on HBO and Channel 4 in 2010, the animated version of their first ground-breaking series, The Ricky Gervais Show, is now available on DVD.

MUSIC REVIEW – Tron Legacy OST by Daft Punk

On paper it’s a match made in heaven; the enigmatic techno-bods Daft Punk scoring the soundtrack to the sci-fi geek’s paradise that is Disney’s long-awaited sequel to Tron. Disney must be commended in some way for having the foresight to enlist Daft Punk instead of opting for a faceless conductor or agoraphobic studio bod. Daft Punk, with their experience and willingness to push the envelope, have yet to work so closely in conjunction with a film studio prior to this release. OSTs do have certain limitations, but are the master of futuristic dance-floor fillers able to clear such obstacles?
