Kick-Ass is the latest in a long line of superhero flicks to hit the big screen. Based on the recent comic book series by Marvel (the film rights were actually sold before the comic went to print), I knew from the trailers it was going to be pretty insane. So I eagerly took my seat in anticipation of what would hopefully be a fresh spin on this often sadly formulaic genre.

Director Martin Scorsese’s latest film sees him team up once more with actor Leonardo DiCaprio, this time in a psychological thriller more akin to Cape Fear than Goodfellas. I must admit, I was pretty worried that Shutter Island would ultimately present us with bog standard horror fare, but boy was I wrong. This is one hell of a film: it claws its way into your head and continues to nibble at the edges constantly throughout.

I first heard The Changes when they were supporting The Dykeenies a few years ago. It was one of those wonderfully rare moments where you go to see a band that you know is great, then unexpectedly discover another one in the process. The Chicago based band blew me away with their signature anthem ‘Her, You and I’, making me rush to the small wooden desk at the back of the gig and buy their album ‘Today Is Tonight’ in a cardboard slipcase (for a fiver!) I have been a huge fan ever since. I was recently lucky enough to catch up with lead singer Darren Spitzer for a chat about the band. I hope AMO’s readers check these guys out! They’re innovative, unique and very alternative.

The Davey Brothers first came to my attention via the 2003 film Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life, with their infectious tune ‘Heart Go Faster’. Unfortunately, it seemed I was destined to never acquire a CD of their music to call my own: their elusive album, Monkey No. 9, was out of print everywhere. HMV couldn’t acquire it for me, neither could Virgin Megastore. I even ordered it off several Amazon sellers, yet time and time again there was some issue along the way and it never arrived. I had given up all hope… until now. Seven years later, The Davey Brothers have sent me a copy of their debut (?!) album for review, with an interview to follow. Ladies and gentlemen, it was truly worth the wait.
