MUSIC REVIEW – Eric Clapton Gig Liverpool

By Marty Mulrooney

What a concert! Clapton has only gotten better with age. Effortlessly cascading through a whole back catalogue of solid gold, he has easily proved that age means little when you have an endless supply of raw talent. By the end, every last person was standing, euphoric electricity thick in the air. Genius. Vids to follow soon (when the hangover clears and I become less of a bias fanboy!)

Do you not think the sound was a tad too bright for the Clapton set in Liverpool most of the evening? Certainly did to me and affected my enjoyment a little. It definitely changed and improved after about an hour! The set list was good but at one point an accompanying video made the atmosphere quite depressing! You could feel the lull in the audience. Blues music although emotional usually lifts you out of that! When the band were in full flow though it was very special and that happened often enough to make the evening a wonderful experience. Andy Fairweather Low and the Low Riders certainly helped too. I’ve seen Clapton on 5 occasions over the last 40 years and for me the evening overall was a 7/10. But for the sound and a very depressing video it would have been a 9.

    • It was 15 years ago, so it’s pretty hard for me to remember! I do recall thinking that it wasn’t as good as when I saw him in Manchester several years earlier. Very little interraction with the crowd and not much of an encore – but to be fair, I posted the above on my phone after a more than a few beers. Spending time with my father watching Clapton was always going to be a special evening, but I’d happily bet that everything you said above is true. Thanks for commenting!
