By Marty Mulrooney

I recently reviewed a fantastic book by Dan Wells called I Am Not A Serial Killer. His debut novel, I found the whole thing a wonderfully dark and thrilling look at serial killers, from the surprisingly effective viewpoint of a 15 year old sociopathic boy!

The novel gives the relatively stale monster/horror genres a much-needed injection of originality as well, which of course makes me very excited to read the sequel, which is due out early next month (entitled Mr Monster). Therefore, I am proud to present a recent chat between myself and Dan Wells, self-admitted armchair killerologist…

BOOK REVIEW – I Am Not A Serial Killer by Dan Wells

By Marty Mulrooney

Aimed at teenage readers, I Am Not A Serial Killer is Dan Wells’ debut novel. Yet, like all good books should be, it can be read and enjoyed by older readers too. That’s right! Parents who thought Harry Potter encouraged witchcraft, you now have something else to moan about. Because I have just read a book aimed at younger readers that is scary, funny and perhaps most importantly, all about serial killers. It is also so well written that as a twenty-something Stephen King fan, I can still appreciate it.

FILM REVIEW – The Mist (Blu-Ray)

By Marty Mulrooney

TheMistBluRayCoverWith Halloween just around the corner, I thought it would be fun to review a great little horror film called The Mist, which was released in 2007. Based on a Stephen King  novella, and directed by long-time King collaborater Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile), The Mist tells the somewhat deceptively simple tale of a father and his son, stuck in a supermarket with a bunch of strangers, in an even stranger mist. FILM REVIEW – Drag Me To Hell

By Marty Mulrooney

Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell is a roller-coaster ride of a film that has completely surprised me and caught me off guard. I am openly not a particular fan of horror films. I have admittedly enjoyed some, such as the recent Stephen King adaptation The Mist, and older classics such as Don’t Look Now, but the majority of modern mainstream, lets-see-how-vulgar-and-disturbing-we-can-be torture porn-fests do little to entice me.

So it was with some trepidation that I went to see Drag Me To Hell. I was with a good friend and thought it might be fun to see a horror film for once, even though there were alternatives such as the usual safe-bet comedies and throw-away action flicks. It was actually a last minute decision in the queue as it was quite late and all the last showings had started.  Regardless, I am glad I made the decision to see this film.
