MUSIC REVIEW – Symphonicities by Sting

By Marty Mulrooney

stingsymphonicities

Symphonicities is Sting’s tenth studio album, sharing its name with his most recent tour and no doubt playfully reminiscent in title to Synchronicity, the final album from his band The Police all the way back in 1983. Heralded as Sting’s greatest hits, re-imagined for symphonic arrangement, he is joined by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra in a delightfully alternative album suitable for fans old and new alike.

GAME REVIEW – Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game (PSN/XBLA)

By Marty Mulrooney

ScottPilgrim_keyart_final_UK

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game is an old school side-scrolling beat ‘em up based within the Scott Pilgrim universe. For those unfamiliar with Scott Pilgrim, he is the titular hero of his own series of graphic novels created by Bryan Lee O’Malley, which were recently adapted for the big screen by director Edgar Wright in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (reviewed here). This downloadable PSN/XBLA game is a tie-in of sorts, taking its art direction directly from the source material, with input from both O’Malley and Wright. The end result is a delightful blend of faux-retro excellence that is both addictively compulsive and a stark reminder of gaming years gone by.

BOOK REVIEW – Harbor Moon by Ryan Colucci (Graphic Novel)

By Marty Mulrooney

HM-Cover

Harbor Moon is an original graphic novel written by Ryan Colucci (who also edited/produced the project) and Dikran Ornekian, in collaboration with Polish artist Paul Sambor and several other talented individuals. Published by Arcana Comics, this unique visual horror story is very much a team effort; there is a strong sense of collaboration conveyed from within every darkened, blood-splattered panel. Colucci’s Spoke Lane Entertainment have certainly excelled in taking a well-known genre and turning it on its head: Harbor Moon is refreshingly different, matching buckets of gore with equal amounts of deadly beauty.

INTERVIEW – In Conversation With Marcus Sedgwick (Author)

By Marty Mulrooney

Marcus Sedgwick 2010 (c) Kate Christer

I recently read a wonderful novel entitled White Crow, describing it as “a scary, heart-warming, intelligent book” in my AMO review and awarding it a perfect 10 OUT OF 10. Quotes from my review have even appeared on the book’s Amazon.co.uk product page! I was therefore understandably delighted when award winning British author Marcus Sedgwich agreed to let me interview him about White Crow and his other novels in an exclusive online interview.
