MUSIC REVIEW – Eye Contact by Gang Gang Dance

By Joseph Marshall

GangGangDanceEyeContact

Gang Gang Dance are a four part boundary pushing collective from New York. Their name goes a long way towards describing their deep, tribal sound, which is at the same time upbeat and urban. In 2004, vocalist Nathan Maddox was killed when he was struck by lightning on the roof of a building in Chinatown, Manhattan. Despite this sudden change in line-up, the band have maintained a steady output. On Eye Contact, their first album since 2008’s ‘Saint Dymphna’, they present a collection of fun and accessible tunes whilst showing no sign of abandoning their worldly-collage sensibility.

INTERVIEW – In Conversation With Paul Carrack (Singer/Songwriter)

By Marty Mulrooney

Paul Carrack

Paul Carrack is a British singer/songwriter who was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. He has played with many successful bands over the years including Ace, Squeeze, Mike & The Mechanics and Roxy Music. He has also toured extensively as a session musician and enjoyed success as a solo artist. Last year, I reviewed Carrack’s latest offering A Different Hat, which I described as “an album that manages to take a wide range of aging material and successfully bring it bang up to date.” The album also featured in AMO’s ‘Best of 2010 Awards’. I am therefore delighted to present an exclusive interview with Paul Carrack where we discuss his extensive music career.

The first play tells me that this is an album of dynamics, with a stark contrast between soft and loud parts being one of the main themes they play on. But as I listen further I discover there is much more to it than that…

MUSIC REVIEW – The King of Limbs by Radiohead

By Joseph Marshall

TheKingOfLimbs-Radiohead

Radiohead are a group who’ve come under a great deal of flak over the years. In Britain at least, they are typically stigmatised as pretentious. Having deserted the grunge and alternative rock roots of their early work back in the late 90’s, they entered the new century with a much more experimental sound and inevitably, not everyone was up for a challenge. Further down the spiral, it’s 2011 and Thom Yorke and co have just released The King of Limbs, an album title which for me conjures up associations of a physically awkward adolescence, as well as the general disembodied weirdness we might all experience from time to time. A simple Google search shows that it is also the name of an oak tree in Swindon, possibly the original inspiration.
