BOOK REVIEW – In The Miso Soup by Ryu Murakami, translated by Ralph McCarthy

By Marty Mulrooney

InTheMisoSoup

In The Miso Soup by Ryu Murakami is a 180 page emotional assault, a book that instils an unshakeable mix of morbid fascination and mounting dread with each passing sentence. It is the story of 20 year old Kenji, a “nightlife guide” in Tokyo, and Frank, a 35 year old American who may very well be a deranged serial killer. Mere days before New Year, the pair embark on a journey through the city’s sex clubs, hostess bars and backstreets that will expose them to the darker sides of both Japan and the human psyche, against a backdrop of sexual depravity and cultural despondency. With 2010 now upon us whether we like it or not, I realised that it would probably be a good idea to look back at what made 2009 such a special year. I would therefore be delighted to share the cream of the crop with you based on my foray into the world of online journalism during 2009. Read on!

By Marty Mulrooney

Hey guys! Today, we hit a milestone with our 17,000th visitor! I am amazed how Alternative Magazine Online has grown, from what was basically a small blog, into a fully functioning site. We also recently took on another writer, bringing the count to four including myself. Welcome to the site Stewart Sutherland!

What does this mean for you, the reader? Well we have a wider range of topics we can write about. All the major games consoles are now covered, as shown recently by our Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 coverage, as well as our continuing PC coverage of course. It also means our other coverage (e.g film and book reviews) can come from more than a single voice, providing even more alternative views… which is what the site is all about!

Also, due to some bad times with my own computer dying recently, I have now upgraded to a brand new machine, and will be installing Windows 7 later this week. Again, this means the site can move with the times in many exciting new ways. Continue reading
